What was she thinking?

It seems my kids seem to get into the most trouble when I am on the telephone.  A few weeks ago after being on the telephone for awhile, I turned around and was shocked to see my 2 year old sporting a new haircut that she had given herself..    I couldn't believe she cut her hair!  I couldn't decide if I should laugh or cry.  In the meantime while Amelia was getting in trouble, her older brother was pretty quite.  I kept asking him why he didn't tell me she was doing it.  As I kept looking at her new do, I realized that there was no way a 2 year old could have cut their hair so short, especially in the back.   Come to find out, Fischer, her older brother did it!  So of course, I said "What were you thinking?"  I never got an answer to that one.
I found this weeks challenge at Mixed Media Monday very difficult.  I almost didn't do the challenge.  I had a hard time trying to illustrate my story.  I made so many different sketches of it and nothing was working.  My brain kind of hurt on this one!  Initially I had a boy and a girl in the drawing but I couldn't get it to work right.   I'm still not totally happy with it, but sometimes you just have to move on.  Not everything works out.
I included a before and after picture of Amelia.  She looks like a little Dutch boy now.  No tears were shed on my part, it's only hair.  Luckily though, it will grow back.

Tattered wings can still fly

DSC_0631
I had fun with this weeks challenge for The Three Muses.  I usually don't use words in my artwork, so this forced me to do so.  There has been lots of pixie dust floating around our house this week.  We checked out Peter Pan from the library and my 5 year old has wanted to watch it everyday.  It was only natural to do a little pixie this week since I keep hearing "you can fly, you can fly."

Mind games

mind games
I had a really hard time coming up with an idea for the challenge this week at Mixed Media Monday, "the games people play."  I am absolutely in love with playing hockey but I just couldn't figure out a way to make a girl look cute in a hockey helmet.  I went with mind games instead, which everyone seems to play, especially when it comes to matters of the heart.

Something in the Air

Here is my first entry for The Three Muses.  The theme being "something in the air."  This piece originally started out being something completely different, but it just wasn't working for me.  Eventually this little woodland fairy emerged from what was starting to feel like a giant mess.
On a side note, every time I read the theme "something in the air," the song "Fernando" by Abba pops into my head.  "There was something in the air that night, the stars were bright Fernando"  I love that song.  It reminds me of playing in my fort as a kid with Abba playing on the record player.

A winged friend

Here's my piece for this week at Mixed Media Monday. The theme is "winged." I just love how bold the little chickadee is. This time of year you can usually find them by the bird feeder or hear them chattering in the trees.

this old gas pump

We've had some beautiful frosts the last two nights with some incredible results. While out taking pictures of the frost on everything I saw this old gas pump sitting perfectly in front of this old building. I should have gotten a close up to see what the price of gas was the last time it was used. It does have the price as cents per gallon!

Old Warehouse

An old empty warehouse sits just a few blocks from our house. I haven't yet learned the history of it, since living here just a year. The outside is covered with old blue tin, with a crumbling brick foundation. Whenever I run past, I always wish that I had my camera to take a few pictures. Of course, as soon as I would get home I would forget all about it. We have finally had some much needed sunshine here with some warmer temperatures. I finally remembered to take some pictures. I love the old blue colors with the contrast of the weathered red. I'd like to take some more this summer and compare the winter light with summer's.

Something New

Here's my entry for Mixed Media Monday. The theme is something new. I used fabric in my collage for the first time. It pretty much looks just like paper

Left overs

This is my left over idea for a theme from Mixed Media Monday from the beginning of December that I never was able to get around to. I've had this idea bouncing around in my head since then and really needed to get it out. The theme was bedtime stories. Our bedtime stories around our house right now usually consist of dragons, dinosaurs, and pirates. I did this painting for my 5 year old to hang in his room. He loves it, except he can't see the pirates and there really should be a volcano.

And a new year begins

Many changes happened this past year, most of them good. The year started with a bone chilling move from Idaho to Wisconsin in the middle of January during a deep freeze. Temperatures were -26 when we pulled in. Luckily it was an uneventful drive. We bought our house sight unseen! Fortunately we like it. We love living in town and have a nice big yard for the kids to enjoy and a good sized garden. This past year I have really felt the pull towards living a more creative life. I really have missed painting and drawing and have really dived into it. So much so, that I quit my job as a nurse in October and have been trying to figure out how to make money from what I really love. My major goal for the year is to do this. I really need to get my confidence up and get my artwork out there.
We moved to this area to have more access to local food and to grow our own. The Amish around here have really been an inspiration in so many ways. They are such hard workers and are able to live without the so called conveniences that we have. They inspire me to try and simplify, to get rid of some clutter, eat local, preserve our own food and whenever possible make things ourselves. Someday I hope I have a root cellar filled to the brim with canned goods like they do. This year I succeeded with a small corner filled with the summers harvests. I felt I did pretty well with our first garden. Garden planning for spring will begin now that the hub bub of the holidays are over. Time to order some seeds!
Cheers to 2010. Good health, happiness and lots of love.
